Moving-In Checklist for a New Flat
Quick answer
A good moving-in checklist for a new flat runs in four stages. Before possession, inspect and get snags fixed. In the week before, arrange electricity, water, internet, a deep clean and the movers. On moving day, protect floors and the lift and label every box by room. In the first week, change lock codes, update your address and meet the maintenance team.

How to use this moving-in checklist for a new flat
Moving is not one task; it is about forty small tasks that all become urgent on the same weekend. The families who move smoothly are simply the ones who did half of those tasks a fortnight earlier. This moving-in checklist for a new flat is arranged by time, not by category, so you can work backwards from your possession date.
Give yourself three weeks if you can. Two of the biggest delays — an electricity meter in your name and an internet connection that actually works — depend on other people's schedules, not yours. Start those first and the rest is packing.
Stage 1: before you take possession
- Do the handover inspection properly, with the builder's representative present and a written list. Our possession handover checklist covers the sequence.
- Make a snag list room by room — tile chips, door alignment, tap pressure, socket testing, window locks, seepage marks. See how to write a snag list.
- Get snags fixed before furniture arrives. A plumber working in an empty flat costs you nothing; the same work around a wardrobe costs you a day.
- Collect documents: possession letter, completion or occupancy documents, warranty cards for fittings, and drawings showing where wiring and pipes run.
- Confirm what is paid: stamp duty and registration are payable at the offer of possession, so budget for them separately from the price — see the total cost of buying a flat.
Stage 2: the week before the move
- Electricity: confirm the meter is installed and in your name, and note the opening reading with a photograph.
- Water and tank cleaning: ask the maintenance team when the overhead tank was last cleaned and run every tap for a few minutes.
- Internet: book installation at least a week ahead and check which providers are already wired into the building.
- Gas: transfer your connection or apply for a new one; keep the address proof handy.
- Deep clean: construction dust settles in drawers, on ceiling fans and behind the WC. Clean before boxes arrive, not after.
- Movers: get two written quotes, confirm insurance, and book the lift or service entry slot with the maintenance office.
- Measure and plan: check that your fridge, bed and wardrobe fit through the doors and into the positions you have imagined.
Stage 3: moving day
Protect the home before anything enters it. Lay old sheets or cardboard along the route from the lift to the door, cover the lift walls if the maintenance team allows, and tape corrugated sheets over door frames at shoulder height. Premium tile flooring survives normal life easily but not a dragged steel almirah — read the premium tiles care guide.
Label boxes by destination room and mark the ten you will open first. Keep one essentials bag with you and never on the truck: documents and keys, chargers and a power strip, toiletries, towels, medicines, a screwdriver, tape and a cutter, bedsheets, and water and snacks. Do a final walk of the old flat for the geyser, the meter reading and anything left in the loft.
Stage 4: the first week in the new flat
- Change the smart-lock codes and delete any code used during construction or handover — see the smart lock guide.
- Test the camera and sensor lights so you know what is covered and what is not.
- Update your address on bank accounts, Aadhaar, insurance policies, driving licence, gas connection and your employer's records.
- Register with the apartment association or maintenance office — get the emergency numbers, the guard's number and the maintenance billing cycle.
- Store documents safely: keep the sale deed, possession letter and receipts in one file, with scans in cloud storage.
- Buy a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit and put them where anyone can find them.
What to fix in the first month, and what to leave
| Do in the first month | Mosquito mesh or netting, wardrobes and kitchen storage, curtain rods, water purifier, chimney, geyser check, balcony drainage test before the monsoon |
|---|---|
| Wait a season | Air conditioners — live through one summer to learn which rooms actually need them; heavy furniture; any false-ceiling or lighting changes |
| Never rush | Structural changes, moving plumbing points, breaking into walls for conduits — get the builder's drawings and written permission first |
| Ask the builder | Warranty coverage on fittings, service contacts for the lift and pumps, and where the electrical distribution board and shut-off valves are |
Living in the building: the first conversations
Two conversations in week one save you a year of irritation. First, the maintenance supervisor: ask about water timings, generator backup, the housekeeping schedule, waste collection, and how to raise a complaint so it gets a record rather than a nod. Second, your immediate neighbours: with five homes on a typical floor at Sorrel Heights, you will meet the same faces daily, and knowing who lives behind each door is the most practical security measure there is.
Also ask the association about house rules early — pets, drilling hours, visitor parking and lift use for moving. If you have a pet, read our pet-friendly flat tips before the first walk. For a wider view of the neighbourhood, see living in Greater Noida West and the Sorrel Heights location page.
Before your possession date, get the details in writing
The smoothest moves start months earlier, at booking, when the payment stages, specifications and handover expectations are clear. If you are still choosing a home, review the layouts on Sorrel Heights floor plans, get the current indicative price sheet on price list & payment plan and see how the buying stages work on buying process. Book a site visit through contact the Sorrel team and ask to see a delivered Sorrel building so you know exactly what handover quality to expect.
